How We Teach Phonics at Broadlea Primary School
At Broadlea Primary School, we believe that strong phonics skills are the foundation for successful reading and writing. That’s why we use the Little Wandle Letters and Sounds Revised programme to teach phonics across our school.
Phonics in Reception and Key Stage 1
- Systematic Teaching: All children in Reception and Key Stage 1 (Years 1 and 2) follow the Little Wandle scheme. This programme is carefully structured to help children learn the sounds that letters make (phonemes) and how to blend them to read words.
- Daily Lessons: Phonics is taught every day through structured, engaging, interactive lessons.
- Progress Tracking: We regularly assess children’s progress to make sure everyone is keeping up and to identify anyone who may need extra help.
Catch-Up Support in Key Stage 2
- Targeted Support: Some children in Key Stage 2 (Years 3–6) may need additional support with phonics. We provide targeted catch-up sessions using Little Wandle’s intervention resources to help close any gaps in learning.
- Regular assessment and tailored support ensures that children continue to build their reading confidence and fluency.
